Grounding Meditation: Arriving in Your Body
When I feel a lot of energy moving (like after an active breathwork practice), I seek out a way to connect my body with the earth. It can be as simple as walking barefoot in the grass for a few minutes or it could be lying down fully and taking deep breaths. Connecting with the earth is very healing.
Potential benefits of grounding
Preliminary research suggests that grounding may reduce inflammation, pain, and stress. It may also improve mood, boost quality of life, reduce blood pressure, improve heart health, and promote muscle recovery. To go deeper, check out “The Earthing Movie: The Remarkable Science of Grounding.”
How to support a grounding practice
First you need to find a place where you can connect with the earth. This could be your yard or a park where you can walk in your bare feet in grass, or a spot where you could sit and take deep breaths. If connecting directly with the earth isn’t available, press your bare hands into the soil of an indoor plant.
Once you’ve had time to connect with the earth, I encourage you to take some deep breaths and practice a short meditation while connected to the earth to fully feel the benefits of grounding.
