First Quarter Moon: Turning Our Intentions into Actions

As the Moon waxes from New to Full, we use this time to take smart action to support our intentions. When we look at our own goals, whether that’s at work, our family or even a new practice, have we created the conditions for success? Are we balancing out our stressors with activities and actions that help reset our nervous system?

Sometimes the most discerning action is inaction. (I’m serious — actually saying no!) We need to recognize that our time is finite. When we think about our time, can we recognize where we prioritize our work, but notice where FURTHER work will not actually be helpful. In these moments, could prioritizing our family, friends or hobbies be a better use of our time?

PRIORITY SETTING EXERCISE

For this exercise, you’ll need:

  • Your intentions or goals from the New Moon (or ones that you’ve recently set for yourself)

  • Pen and journal

  • 15 minutes

To begin:

  • Open your journal and list “priorities” on the left side of the page and “non-negotiables” on the right side of the page

  • Look back at your intentions and goals and think about what immediate actions you can take to reach your goals

  • Map out small, manageable, and incremental steps to reach those goals

Then:

  • Prioritize 3 to 5 of your goals on the left side of your journal

  • Make sure you include yourself in your priorities and get tactical and stay realistic based on what fits your current schedule and resources

Next:

  • Create a list of your “non-negotiables” on the right side that are the qualities you would like to cultivate (i.e. kindness to others, compassion for yourself, etc.) that are your non-negotiables for how you want to show up in the world

  • These do NOT need to pair exactly with each of the priorities on the left

Take purposeful action:

  • Recall your intention. How does it dovetail with your non-negotiables? If there is a mismatch, adjust either your intention or revisit your non-negotiables.

  • Assess new opportunities before saying yes. When you have a new opportunity pop up, review it against your priorities and non-negotiables. If it does not align, then you should not take action.

  • Announce your intentions and goals for the new month. Even if you only share your goals with one trusted person, you are more likely to stick with them.

One last reflection: What action could you take this Moon phase to make sure you start following your non-negotiables
